A vous premièrement, qui êtes les héritiers de l'alliance et de la bénédiction, (verset 25) Dieu a suscité et envoyé son serviteur (c'està-dire : son fils, Jésus-Christ : voir sur ce mot serviteur, verset 13, note) pour vous bénir, en vous faisant part de toutes les grâces qu'il a promises par ses prophètes. (versets 20-25)

Mais cette bénédiction, vous n'y aurez part que par la repentance (verset 19) que Dieu veut opérer en vous et qui vous fera haïr et abandonner vos méchancetés. (B porte les méchancetés.)

La plupart de nos versions françaises, avec les anciens commentateurs, traduisent : en détournant chacun de vos méchancetés ; la bénédiction offerte consisterait dans la sanctification opérée par Dieu. Ils se fondent sur le fait que le verbe employé a toujours le sens actif dans le Nouveau Testament.

Mais comme il se trouve dans les Septante avec le sens réfléchi : se détourner, les interprètes modernes (Reuss, Holtzmann, Wendt) préfèrent la traduction que nous avons adoptée. Elle met dans la bouche de l'apôtre un appel semblable à celui du verset 19, et qui est bien à sa place au terme de ce discours.

Après avoir annoncé les plus riches grâces de l'Evangile, Pierre prêche la conversion par laquelle l'homme doit les saisir. Et cet appel ne fut pas vain, car sa prédication puissante eut un magnifique résultat. (Actes 4.4)

- Il ne faudrait pas croire toutefois que l'apôtre, tout pénétré qu'il était des privilèges de son peuple, s'enfermât dans le particularisme juif.

Ce mot : A vous premièrement, ouvre une vaste perspective sur d'autres peuples qui auront part aux bénédictions de l'Evangile.

C'est, comme l'observe Olshausen, l'Esprit de Dieu qui élève l'apôtre à cette vue de l'avenir. Il lui faudra ensuite une révélation spéciale pour comprendre et accepter que le salut est destiné aux païens comme aux Juifs. (Actes 10 ; Actes 11.17 ; 15.7-11. Comparer Actes 2.39, note.)
